Joi Nelson had big plans after high school, but the stumbling blocks she faced almost defeated her. Until...

Joi Nelson, high school Class of 2017. Currently a college student at Southeastern Louisiana University.

We met Joi when she was in 12th grade at Lutcher High School in St. James Parish, Louisiana. Today, she is enrolled at Southeastern Louisiana University, the third largest university in the state. To meet her, one would never know Joi's personal struggles and the obstacles in her path.

Joi's birth mother passed away tragically when Joi was an infant, leaving her and and her siblings in a precarious situation. However, several positive female influences in her life – including her adoptive mother and her Career Compass college & career coach – helped her become a strong, optimistic young woman who knows what she wants and how to achieve it.

Joi credits her Career Compass college & career coach with helping her develop a plan to overcome her financial struggles and pursue her dream of becoming a pharmacist one day. Like Joi, many students do not have ready access to the financial resources to take the road less traveled – to college. Other may lack reliable, timely information about available post- secondary opportunities.

Most students, regardless of their backgrounds, need some extra support and guidance during the career choice and college application process. As a nonprofit organization, we are committed to providing our services to public high school students at no cost to them or to their families. We are able to do this because we rely on a mix of support from various sources that believe, like we do, that effective college & career coaching should be widely available to all students.

Donate today. You will forever be a part of changing a student's life, helping them to overcome obstacles that threaten to stand in their way of post-secondary success.
